Our first project together and for some, first meeting as well!
Time box was based on the live paintings by Japanese art group Rinpa Eshidan that was shown on youtube. This idea of a recorded “live” painting session that would be distributed over the internet was a new experiment for all of us. It was temporary, not precious nor planned and it was more about being able to see the artwork develop rather than the final piece. The project was quickly planned and executed over a weekend with over 20 hours of footage recorded. The location was set in a studio/boxing gym in Newtown which belonged to a friend of Will’s and we attached MDF boards to the walls as the canvas. Haline supplied the technical equipment to film the process. Type of mediums was kept simple and included house paint, posca pens and spray cans.
Each image took approximately an hour and a half to create before it was painted away. It’s funny because some people who have seen it are shocked to see the images just being wiped away; it’s hard to accept that it’s deliberate! It actually felt liberating creating the work, it didn’t need to be perfect, let your imagination run wild and go crazy!
We created our own film documentary complete with conga lines, office chair gliding and lots of accidents. I just remember laughing so much, to have awesome art, and awesome people to share it with, awesome!
